Rawhitiroa Wetland Project

Welcome to the Rawhitiroa Wetland Project. We are a group with a goal to preserve this unique 2 ha reserve.

Whether you are an individual, business or organisation you are very welcome to join us. Our aim is to: – create a native habitat for the endangered Brown Mud Fish – preserve local history -create an ‘outdoor classroom’ for all schools to enjoy

We hope to achieve this in 3 phases:

1. develop a track through the existing bush area, remove interior fencing, repair the boundary fences and eradicate the blackberry.

2. develop the ponds and causeways. The ponds will need to ‘sit’ for 3 years before the Mud Fish can be introduced.

3. while the ponds are settling, native flora will be planted, information boards erected and outdoor tables and seating constructed. If costs permit, online cameras will be installed so that wildlife can be observed at any time from home or school.

Eastern Taranaki is rich in local history – visitors will discover Maori history and stories of the early settlers.

Students will learn to identify native species and threats and discover their own role in conservation. Educators will be available for planned visits, or lesson plans provided to allow schools to study within their own curriculum.

The site will demonstrate the beauty of wetlands, and the important role they play in agriculture and preserving native wildlife at the same time.

The tracks are planned to allow elderly, disabled and young people to have an enjoyable and safe visit.

The wetland project will be connected to the Memorial pools which is a popular summer destination.
